Furthermore, it should be mentioned that the Canary Islands have undergone what could be considered as a stampede of workers from the countryside to the city since the sixties. Thus a great deal of the people living in the outskirts migrated to the urban areas where labour force was required and to the coast areas where a rapid urbanization process was taking place due to the requirements of a growing tourist sector.
This process began in San Miguel de Abona since the ninety seventies and changes were more accentuated especially in the new centres located in the coast area such as Las Chafiras, Guargacho, Golf del Sur and Amarilla Golf, which together with Zocas and Aldea Blanca areas account for 54% of the population in San Miguel.
